Three reasons to give to PHRA
1) PHRA saves lives.
HIV/AIDS and opiate overdose have killed thousands of injection drug users. To respond to this crisis, we have launched large-scale programs that effectively and measurably save lives.
Our needle exchange programs distributed more than 2.6 million sterile syringes into the community last year, giving drug users the resources they need to avoid HIV and Hepatitis C infection. Harm reduction programs, like needle exchange, have proven to be very effective at fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Today in the Seattle-Tacoma region, where the first needle exchange programs in the country were adopted as early as 1988, only 2-3% of injection drug users (IDUs) are HIV positive. In major east coast cities, where needle exchange programs were implemented later, HIV prevalence rates among IDUs are as high as 15 to 20%.
Drug overdose is a leading cause of accidental death in Washington State. Starting last summer PHRA became the first organization in the state to distribute Naloxone, a medication that can quickly reverse the effects of opiate overdose and prevent death.
Donate to a cause that delivers real, meaningful results—results that save lives and improve quality of life.
2) PHRA is about the community.
What would you think of a gay rights advocacy group that included no gay members? What would the NAACP be if it had an all-Caucasian board of directors?
Current and former drug users are represented at all levels of PHRA, from our all-volunteer staff to our board of directors. Without direct, active input from the drug using community, PHRA's services simply could not be as effective. Our services are relevant to the community we serve.
Harm reduction is not just about diseases found only in closed communities. The harm reduction services PHRA provides are designed to reduce infection rates of not only HIV, but also hepatitis C and MRSA (also known as the “superbug” of staph infections), among others.
PHRA uses your donations to help your community in a real way, making it safer and healthier for everyone.
3) PHRA puts funds to work.
Our organization is overseen, administered, and staffed by a dedicated force of volunteers. Our executive director draws only a living wage, and all other funds go directly to the needs of PHRA's programs. We make the most of every dollar.
When you donate to PHRA, you can be sure that your contribution is making a direct and positive impact on the harm reduction services in your community.
